Part 1: General

Submittal
Submit color sample(s) of each color specified from manufacturer’s series. Submit product literature, certification, test reports, full size sample(s) of each color
specified or selected.

Quality Assurance
All high density pre finished concrete masonry units shall be HARVARD BRIK™ masonry units manufactured by Northfield Block Company. All units shall conform
to ASTM C-90-02, and shall have either a smooth or striated finish as shown on the drawings.
Field Constructed Mock-ups: Construct a separate (not part of the actual wall) sample panel no less than 4’ x 4’ of units of each color and size to be used in the project. The cleaning agent and method should also be determined at the time sample panel is constructed. Walls built without approved field mock-ups constitute acceptance.

Delivery, Storage and Handling
HARVARD BRIK™ units shall be delivered to the job site banded. Store in single-stacks on level ground and cover with waterproof covering (e.g. tarpaulins) to protect
the units from inclement weather. Units must be handled carefully to avoid breakage and damage to the finished surfaces.

Project/Site Conditions and Handling
Cover walls each day after installation to keep open walls protected and dry.

Part 3: Execution

Laying Masonry Walls
Lay units using the best concrete masonry practices. Install only quality units, reject all defective units. Align units level, plumb, and true with uniform,
carefully-tooled 3/8” wide joints on the finished side of the wall. Draw blocks from two or more pallets at a time during installation. Type N mortars are
recommended for veneer construction. Type M or S mortars are recommended for through wall/load -bearing construction.

Installation
Sills, copings and chimney caps of solid masonry units, stone, reinforced concrete, or corrosion resistant metal are to be used. To be most effective, masonry, stone, concrete sills, copings and chimney caps should project beyond the face of the wall; have drips that are at least 1 inch (25mm) from the face of the wall, and have functional flashing and weep holes. In addition, all sills, copings and chimney caps should be sloped a minimum of 1:4; be mechanically anchored to the wall, and
should have properly sized, located, and sealed movement joints when necessary.
Lighting: Provide adequate lighting for masonry installation by placing all lighting a reasonable distance from the wall for even illumination. Do not use trough permanent lighting.
Cutting: Make all unit cuts, including those for bonding, holes, boxes, etc., with motor-driven masonry saws, using either an abrasive or diamond blade.
Cut neatly for best appearance.
Joints: All mortar joints shall be tooled concave joints.

Inspection
The facing shall be free from chips, cracks, crazes or any other imperfections that would detract from the overall appearance of the finished wall when viewed from
a distance of fifteen (15) feet at right angles to the wall with normal lighting.

Flashing of Masonry Work
Install flashing at locations shown in the plans and in strict accordance with the details and the best masonry flashing practices. Functional, unpunctured flashing and weep holes are to be used: base of wall above grade, above openings in wall, shelf angles, lintels, wall-roofing intersections, chimneys, bay windows, and below
window sills and copings. The flashing should be extended beyond the exterior face of the wall. The flashing should have end dams at its discontinuous ends, and
properly sealed splices and laps at its joints.

Installation Recommendations
• For 4” exterior concrete masonry a complimentary or matching mortar color is recommended when using HARVARD BRIK™ units.
• Control joints are recommended approximately every twenty (20) feet, at inside corners, 4” from one of the exterior corners, at jambs of windows or at change
of heights. Application of Dow Corning sealant #495 is recommended at vertical joints.

Installation Requirements
• Continuous horizontal 4” ladder joint reinforcement is required in the exterior wythe every 16”, IN ADDITION to the adjustable joint reinforcement.
G-PRO ® Masonry Sealer shall be applied to all Harvard Brik™ installations after cleaning the mortar from Harvard Brik™ according to the recommended specifications.
Limitations
• The facing is not intended for use as an impervious surface.
• Acid solutions should not be used as a cleaning agent or in direct contact with the facing.

Integral Water-Repellent Admixture
Description: An integral liquid polymeric admixture mixed with concrete during production of concrete masonry units which becomes an integral part of the cement matrix being locked into the concrete masonry unit or bond beam to provide resistance to water penetration to achieve a Class E Rating as stated in E514-74 when
tested in accordance with ASTM E514 for 72 hours. Product: DRY-BLOCK Block Admixture by W.R.GRACE & CO.-CONN.

Mortar Admixtures
Description: An integral liquid polymeric admixture designed specifically for use in a mortar mix, which becomes an integral part of the cement matrix being locked
into the mortar to provide resistance to water penetration, achieving a Class E Rating when tested in a wall section in accordance with ASTM 514.
Product: DRY-BLOCK Mortar Admixture by W.R.GRACE & CO.-CONN.

Concrete Masonry Units”

Weep Holes and Vents
Install weep holes and vents at proper intervals (32” O.C. and 2” high) at flashing, and at flashing over windows, doors, and beams.

Cleaning
Keep walls clean daily during installation using brushes, rags and burlap squares. Do not allow excess mortar lumps or smears to harden on the finished surfaces.
Clean walls by dry brushing or if necessary scrub with a mild detergent and clear water. Harsh cleaning methods after walls have been erected might mar the surface appearance of the units. Applying acid cleaners and/or using high pressure can result in damage to the masonry and can negatively affect the water-repellent properties
of DRY-BLOCK treated masonry. Please refer to W.R.GRACE Technical Bulletin #13 for more cleaning guidelines.

Final Clean Down
No ACID or ACID base solutions shall be used in the cleaning of HARVARD BRIK™ units. A detergent masonry cleaner, as used on the field mock-ups, shall be used following the manufacturer’s instructions and the surface shall be thoroughly rinsed with clean water.

Maintenance
HARVARD BRIK™ units, properly installed and cleaned, need virtually no maintenance other than routine cleaning with standard commercial grade cleaning agents. Graffiti, paint or dye stains may need special cleaning methods and products. Contact manufacturer for specific cleaning recommendations.
